In 1367 there was already a fish market. The boatmen from Holland, Zeeland and Flanders came across the river Mark (for many centuries the main supply route) and moored here. The harbour, the scales and the fish hall (this dates from about 1760) and the old crane have determined the cityscape here for many centuries. In this part of the harbour, up to the sixteenth century, shipwrights' yards, but especially beer breweries were located. Part of the brewery "De Witte Leeuw" (The White Lion) still rises above the fishing hall. It is the tall building that now houses Restaurant BINNEN. The mansion in front of it, on the Haven at no. 20, is the former Brouwershuis (brewery).
