'Rendez - vous'
The Spanjaardsgat is a water gate located between the Granaattoren and the Duiventoren of the Castle of Breda in the center of Breda. The water gate can only be seen from the outside. The Spanjaardsgat symbolises the hole that the Spaniards left in 1590. Skipper Adriaen van Bergen is said to have smuggled a number of soldiers into the city here to drive out the Spaniards (in reality, however, this happened elsewhere). Van Bergen sailed on with his peat ship to the watergate of the Breda Castle on the current Academiesingel. The Spanjaardsgat was built 20 years after the event with the Breda Turfschip.
The Spanjaardsgat, and especially the nearby 'bridge', are known as 'rendezvous' (meeting point) because it is an access road to the bustling city center. Nowadays it also hosts many events such as the Jazz Festival, the Valkenberg Concerts, the Light Boat Tour and in 2012 the Redbull fierljeppen.
