Aldo Rossi's lighthouse was originally located in the Wilhelminapark in Breda. Today Rossi's 'Lighthouse' can be seen on the corner of the Emmastraat and the Academiesingel. Here the work stands in the water, to the right of the entrance to Park Valkenburg. For those who visit Breda by train and walk from the station to the center, the lighthouse is like a beacon, like a marker at the entrance to the city. Many designs by Aldo Rossi (1931-1997) occupy the borderland between visual art and architecture. Perhaps his work is best characterised as visual architecture. The artwork in Breda is a spatial, architectural model and clearly recognisable as a lighthouse. The octagonal 18 meter high work only does not function as a lighthouse, it is not accessible and stands in this urban environment in a very strange place.
